Job Description

  • On a military airfield, performs firefighting activities that are particular to structure fires.
  • Performs military aircraft and munitions-specific firefighting and crash recovery operations.
  • One or more firefighting and crash rescue vehicles, such as a twin agent fire/crash truck, tankers, rescue vehicles, and quick reaction vehicles, are driven, operated, and maintained.
  • Provides collision victims with first assistance and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Inspects fire/rescue equipment and vehicles to ensure that they are always ready.
  • Minor repairs and maintenance of fire/rescue equipment and vehicles.
  • Conducts facility inspections to look for violations of fire prevention regulations, as well as fire dangers and inadequacies.
  • Participates in demonstrations of structural and aircraft/munitions fire prevention, firefighting, and crash rescue procedures and equipment.
  • Attends crash rescue procedures and practises training.
  • Assists with related tasks as needed.

Job Description

  • Responds to actual or potential aircraft emergencies to prevent or extinguish fires on aircraft, airport facilities, and the Air National Guard Base; rescues injured people at the scene of emergencies by providing basic emergency medical care, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), until further medical treatment is available.
  • Drives to the scene of an actual or projected crash/emergency to operate firefighting vehicles and equipment; places vehicles suitably for effective firefighting operations and rescue of passengers/crew; properly applies extinguishing agents for control and extinguishment of fires.
  • While wearing heavy fire protective clothing and equipment, fights fires, rescues entrapped people, and provides emergency medical care.
  • Prevents property damage from fire and water by undertaking salvage operations and suppressing fires to minimise property loss.
  • As part of an ongoing training programme, attends/teaches classes and practical demonstrations in crash response, rescue, structural firefighting techniques, and emergency medical methods; studies directives, regulations, available training materials, and technical publications; confers with supervisor to clarify technical matters or questions.
  • Performs routine maintenance on aircraft emergency speed reduction systems, including disassembling and resetting to assure correct performance.
  • Cleans, inspects, and adjusts firefighting equipment to ensure correct performance; cleans stations and conducts other maintenance tasks to create a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Inspection of facilities and fire extinguishers, completion of facility pre-fire plans, and presentation of fire protection training to staff all contribute to reducing fire threats.
  • Lifts and transports ladders, tools, and firefighting equipment from the fire truck to designated locations, which may be a long distance away or up stairwells.
  • Climbs ladders of various lengths to reach locations where fire control is required or where people are confined; lifts and operates tools and conducts other firefighting operations while on a ladder; and carries firefighting equipment while ascending and descending ladders.
