Introduction

The IIT Madras HSEE is a unique opportunity for candidates to get admitted to programs at IIT Madras. This is done by conducting the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE). The first two years of the MA program offered at IIT Madras are the same, however, after that, the course branches into two streams namely Integrated MA in Development Studies and Integrated MA in English Studies. This is what the IIT Madras HSEE exam is about, for which 52 seats are available each year.

The exam conducting authority of HSEE has released the HSEE eligibility criteria for 2022 along with the official notification on the official website and the applicants appearing for the exam must check the HSEE eligibility criteria for 2022 before filling out the application form. The eligibility criteria of HSEE 2022 comprise the qualifying exam, age limit, and minimum marks required for admissions.

Age Criteria

General category candidates are eligible to apply for HSEE 2022 if they are born on or after October 1, 1995. SC/ST/PwD candidates are given an age relaxation of 5 years.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Candidates of the general category and OBC category must have scored a minimum of 60 percent aggregate marks in the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates of SC, ST, and PwD categories are required to possess a minimum of 55 percent aggregate marks in the qualifying examination.
  • If the qualifying marks are released in the form of grades, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of joining.

Application Process

Step 1 Registration

The candidate must register on the application portal of HSEE with a valid email id and mobile number and the provided details must be correct as all further communications related to HSEE 2022 would be made through the email ID that the candidate provides

Step 2 Uploading documents

  • Scanned photograph and signatures of the candidate. 
  • Scanned copy of 10th Class Public Examination certificate for Name and proof of date of birth.
  • Scanned copy of 10+2 Class mark sheet (if already passed 10+2 examination). 
  • Scanned copy of category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL-Undertaking).

Step 3 Payment of fees

Candidates can pay the application fee via Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card/Indian Bank challan where the amount to be paid is


  • Female candidates and SC, ST, and PwD candidates have to pay Rs. 1200/- 
  • While candidates belonging to the General/ OBC category have to pay Rs. 2400/-. 
  • Additional service charges Rs.40/-.of the Bank also has to be paid by the candidates. 

Step 4 filling the form

Candidates must choose category General, SC, ST, or OBC-NCL from the drop-down box, then their gender, Nationality, Date of Birth, Complete Postal Address, and city of examination.
